Development of the UK Renewables Atlas

The most recognised source of publicly available wave, tide and wind data for UK waters

Metocean data

To help the government take forward its ambitions for the sector, ABPmer began the development of an Atlas of UK Marine Renewable Energy in 2003. Working with major holders of marine data, Met office and Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL), ABPmer managed the delivery of the Atlas, combining the data into GIS datalayer maps.

  • 2004 – the original UK Renewables Atlas is published
  • 2008 – greater access is afforded to updated datasets via and online webGIS
  • 2011 – the Atlas and associated downloads is hosted on the ABPmer website
  • 2017 – the resources are made available on a dedicated website, the UK Renewables Atlas

The Atlas is continually developed in-house to extend the information available and monitor industry update. Unique exploration tools have been developed to complement the resource maps, enabling greater understanding at site selection.

The Atlas continues to attract great interest across the industry, and remains the most recognised source of freely available information on potential marine energy resources in UK waters.

To explore the Atlas and associated downloads, visit the UK Renewables Atlas website.
